Weekend Randoms 2

  1. Watching Judah learn to walk - and seriously, this is ALL HE WANTS TO DO NOW - offers us a neat picture of our own language learning journey. Having our hand held. Slowly. One step at a time. Hopefully one day we’ll do a happy dance like he does near the end of the video.
  2. Speaking of language learning, FRENCH has been coming out of our mouths lately. Could you believe that? I guess we’re defaulting to the language we learned (unsuccessfully) in school. ‘Je ne sais pas’ (I don’t know) and ‘Mais…” (But…) are common ones.
  3. In Tanzania both Christian and Islam holy days/holidays are observed. This week was the end of Ramadan. The interesting thing is that the days are marked by the sighting of the moon. This means that the holiday is decided on, literally, the night before. So on Monday night we all went to bed thinking and hoping that we might not have class (some of us didn’t do our homework). But alas, the moon was hidden. Our day off was Wednesday instead which broke up the week nicely.
  4. Poverty. I think I’ll have more to say about this later. But for now, I’ll say this: It was one thing to say during our presentations, “In Tanzania, many people live on a dollar or two a day.” It’s another thing to see these people in the flesh, to walk with them, to converse with them, to pay their salary even. Something is wrong.
